Do you have the same font throughout? Do you have a creative title? Does the conclusion restate the thesis and the main points from the body paragraphs? Did you proofread your paper? Does your paper show evidence of critical thinking?
I then have students keep their diagnostic assignments and checklists in their writing folders to revisit at the ends of the semester and school year. Who has a stake in the issue? Do you address other perspectives and sides of the argument? To do this, first choose one student to model the self-editing phase.

The interaction between peers will help make the editing process more explicit. Do you have transitions between paragraphs and ideas that help your ideas flow? They have no concrete understanding of the audience they are writing for, and assume the instructor, who will grade their papers, is the only reader they need to worry about.

Make expectations and standards clear. Tell students about their audience. Make connections to textual evidence, demonstrating a level of mastery on the subject. Student should have already worked through content revisions before reaching the editing step.
If you would like to quantify this diagnostic data, consider assigning grades or points to each portion of the diagnostic series and using this data to track student growth throughout the school year.
After the self-edit is complete, discuss the process with the students. Is the vocabulary level sophisticated enough? Prior to having students use this tool independently, it is important to model its use. Does each paragraph open with a topic sentence that relates to the thesis and summarizes the points in the paragraph?
